What is a terrarium and how does it work?

What’s the difference between closed and open terrariums?

Which plants grow best in a closed terrarium?

Do terrariums need sunlight?

How long do terrariums last?

With correct light and occasional pruning, terrariums can thrive for years. Expect seasonal adjustments (condensation, trimming) and refresh moss or accents annually if needed.

Care & troubleshooting

How often should I water a closed terrarium?

Usually rarely. If glass stays fogged, it’s too wet—vent for a few hours. If leaves droop and morning condensation is absent, add a small amount of water with a mister. Care guide

Why is my terrarium fogging up?

Condensation is normal after watering or temperature change. Persistent fog = excess moisture. Vent briefly, wipe glass, and move to cooler, indirect light.

My Fittonia is wilting—what should I do?

Fittonia “faints” when dry or overheated. Lightly mist the soil and move to bright indirect light. It typically perks up within hours. Avoid direct sun.

How do I stop mould (white fuzz)?

Vent the lid, reduce watering, remove decaying leaves, and increase airflow around the vessel. A little biofilm is normal; persistent fuzz means it’s too wet.

How do I get rid of fungus gnats?

Let the top layer dry slightly, reduce watering, and use sticky traps outside the glass. Remove decaying matter and avoid constantly damp soil.

Do terrariums work in Australia’s summer heat?

Yes—keep glass out of direct sun and away from hot windows. Vent briefly if fog persists. During heatwaves, water less and use gentle airflow nearby (not directly on plants).

How do I clean the glass safely?

Use a microfiber cloth outside. Inside, a cotton bud or soft brush works. Avoid harsh cleaners; a little diluted vinegar on a cloth (kept away from plants) removes mineral spots.

Can you build a custom terrarium?

Yes—choose vessel shape, planting style (lush forest, mossy minimal), and gift note. Typical lead time: 2–5 business days. Request custom

What size terrarium should I choose for a gift?

Can I add mini figurines or crystals?

Yes—place on top of substrate so they don’t block drainage. Choose inert, non-toxic pieces and keep them clear of plant crowns to prevent moisture build-up.

Do you offer gift wrapping and a message card?

Can I change or cancel my order?

Where do you deliver terrariums in Australia?

We deliver ready-made terrariums to eligible postcodes (shown at checkout). Accessories ship Australia-wide. Live plant kits/soil blends cannot be sent to WA, TAS, NT due to biosecurity. Delivery info

What are Christmas shipping cut-offs?

Cut-offs vary by carrier. As a guide: Standard mid-Dec; Express a few days later; Digital gift cards are instant. Check our banner and Shipping page for current dates.

How are terrariums packaged for safe delivery?

Snug inserts, breathable wraps, and fragile handling. If damaged on arrival, email helpme@planthomewares.com.au with photos within 12 hours so we can help promptly. Damages policy

Do you offer local pickup or same-day delivery?

Where available, yes—options appear at checkout by postcode. For urgent gifts, choose Express or Digital gift cards. Pickup & delivery

Policies & practicalities

What’s your returns policy?

For non-custom items, returns are accepted in original condition within 30 days (excludes sale items). For breakages, email within 12 hours of delivery with photos. Full policy

Can I return a custom terrarium?

Custom builds are made to order and are generally not returnable. If there’s an issue on arrival, contact us within 12 hours with photos and we’ll make it right per policy.

Do you offer a refresh or repair service?

Yes—book a terrarium refresh: we trim, re-moss, clean glass, and rebalance the landscape. Ideal at 12–24 months or after a house move. Refresh info

Are your products safe around pets and children?

Terrariums are decorative; keep out of reach. Soil, stones, and small decor aren’t for ingestion. Candles should be used with standard home care and never inside a terrarium.
