Simple care steps to help your little world thrive.
Quick Care Summary
Terrariums are easy to look after.
Open terrariums like bright, indirect light and a light mist every few days to keep the soil moist (not soggy).
Closed terrariums recycle moisture inside the glass—water only when the moss/soil look dry, often about monthly. Both do best with simple observation, occasional trimming, and a little fresh air.
Open terrarium
Light & position
Bright, indirect light.
Keep out of direct sun (glass magnifies heat).
Avoid heaters and air-con vents.
Watering
Use a fine spray mister; keep soil moist, not wet.
Rule of thumb: every 3–5 days in summer, every 7–10 days in winter.
Finger test: if it’s dry a couple of centimetres down, it needs water.
Wipe the glass after misting to reduce watermarks.
Simple tips
No fertiliser (it makes plants outgrow the space).
Trim spent or yellowing leaves.
Watch how quickly it dries and adjust your misting.
Closed terrarium
Light
Bright, indirect light.
Avoid direct sun to prevent overheating.
Watering
Moisture recycles inside the glass.
Only water when moss and soil look dry—often about once a month.
Rainwater or filtered water is best if you have it.
Fresh air & condensation
Open the lid for about 1 hour weekly.
If heavy condensation builds up, open briefly and wipe the glass.
Mould watch
If you see mould, open the lid, reduce watering, and remove any affected leaves.
Gently poke a few small holes in the soil with a skewer to improve airflow.
Quick reminders
Terrariums are low maintenance and beginner-friendly.
